Val Venosta

Val Venosta, home to our hotel in Sluderno, is one of the sunniest valleys in South Tyrol. Surrounded by impressive mountain massifs, it provides a mild climate and a breath-taking landscape.

Historically significant, the region is known for the glacier mummy Ötzi, which was discovered in 1991. Charming towns like Glorenza, Malles and Resia as well as sights including Castel Coira and Marienberg Benedictine Abbey tempt you to go exploring.

Whether it is hiking, skiing or a ride on the Val Venosta railway, the valley inspires at any time of the year with its nature, culture and regional specialities such as Lasa marble and Val Venosta apples.

Lake Resia

Artificially created Lake Resia is located at 1498 metres altitude and is one of the biggest in the region. Its striking feature is the Tower of Curon which emerges from the water, providing an impressive image with the Ortles in the backdrop.

A tragic story lies behind this setting. The church dating from the 14th century and the village of Curon were flooded in 1950 by the reservoir. Despite the resistance of the population, over 160 homes had to be abandoned. These days the lake is a popular excursion destination, inspiring with its unique backdrop.

Adige Cycle Path

The cycle path from Resia to Merano is one the loveliest in the Alps. Around 80 kilometres in length, proceeding along the historic Via Claudia Augusta, this family-friendly passes through picturesque villages, castles, archaeological sites and impressive natural surroundings.

Highlights along the path include Lake Resia, Marienberg Benedictine monastery, the Roman village of Malles, the medieval town of Glorenza and Laas, known for its marble. The route ends in the spa town of Merano, bringing together history and unique views.

Castel Coira

Enthroned high above Sluderno is Castel Coira, one of the best preserved castles in South Tyrol. Built in 1260 by the Prince-Bishop of Chur, it passed to the Trapp counts in the 16th century, who transformed it into a superb Renaissance residence.

The abundantly adorned loggia, the Romanesque style chapel and the splendid rooms are particularly impressive. The armoury houses one of the biggest collections of weaponry in Europe, while the Ancestral Hall has portraits of the Trapp family dating from the 16th to the 19th century.

Glorenza

In Alta Val Venosta, at the foot of the Tarces hill, is Glorenza – a perfectly preserved medieval town which has a unique architectural charm. At one time a key trading place, after devastation in the Swabian War in 1499, it was provided with new fortifications in the guise of imposing town walls and defensive towers.

As well as the impressive fortifications, residences for the nobility, medieval arcades and churches also inspire. In Tubre tower, a permanent exhibition commemorates the famous illustrator Paul Flora. These days Glorenza and its historic atmosphere attracts countless visitors every year.

Waalweg trails

The Waalweg trails in Val Venosta are former irrigation canals, which were once used to regulate water. Built along the mountain slopes, they guided melt water to the fields, and were then later turned into picturesque hiking paths.

Accessible year-round for walks, they provide spectacular views to the valley and the surrounding mountains. The Waalweg trails are ideal for families, pleasure hikers and nature lovers who want to explore the unique flora in Val Venosta.

Stelvio National Park

Stelvio National Park is one of the biggest conservation areas in Europe and was set up in 1935. Over 40 % of its surface area, including the Ortles-Cevedale Group is located in South Tyrol and extends right into Val Venosta.

The park provides unspoilt natural surroundings and is a paradise for mountain climbers, skiers and hikers. With its impressive landscape, it attracts countless visitors every year who are looking for relaxation and adventure in the middle of the majestic mountains.
